About the artist
Anicka Yi and Maggie Peng have always shared an interest in scent. They started collaborating when artist Anicka approached her architect friend Maggie to help her create an all natural fragrance for an art project. They both were smitten with the process and embarked upon creating their own fragrance, thus Shigenobu Twilight was born. They wanted to create a new narrative for fragrance, an alternative to the commercial beauty narrative. They wanted to tell a story with scent, part biography, part mystical fiction. Tapping into the sensorial memory machine of perfume, they set out to frame their fragrance around a political exiled figure Fusako Shigenobu, founder and leader of the Japanese Red Army. Yi and Peng evoke Shigenobu’s extended exile in Lebanon. The perfume’s esoteric notes intimate metaphors of her stateless gulf, living furtively in Lebanon in the shadow of estrangement from her native Japan.
This handcrafted scent is composed of three kinds of cedar wood as its base note with top notes of yuzu fruit, shiso leaf and black pepper as well as hinoki, violet leaf and nutty heart notes. The bottle is made of raw cedar wood, each hand cut in architectural geometry, encasing a 10ml glass bottle of liquid within. Each bottle is unique with no two alike. The elegant wooden bottle punctuates iconic form while diffusing meaning into infinite shapes.
